When Michael Caines first visited the dilapidated Lympstone Manor, he was inspired by the prospect of planting a vineyard on the sheltered South Western slopes of the Exe Estuary. And he was following a proud tradition.
The Romans planted the first vines in Devon two thousand years ago, making the most of the county’s mild climate and rich, well-drained soil. Today, Devon is home to several famous vineyards and English wine has a growing international reputation.
Lympstone Manor is unique in being the only Michelin-starred hotel and restaurant to boast its own vineyard.
In May 2018, 17,500 vines were planted at Lympstone Manor Estates to produce high-quality English sparkling wines. The first harvest was in 2020, after an exceptionally warm and dry growing season.
These wines have been enjoyed by visitors to Lympstone Manor Estates and to add another dimension to our offering, we have now opened an online shop – making it possible to savour our growing collection of still and sparkling wines no matter wherever you live.
The Lympstone Manor Estate Classic Cuvee (a blend of Pinot Noir, Meunier and Chardonnay grapes), would make an ideal Valentine’s present – perfect as a decadent Valentines aperitif or kept to be savored for a later date.
